A few years ago, most of the news from state legislators related to anti-immigration measures designed to drive out of status immigrants from their states. Arizona and Alabama are, of course, the best remembered examples. Some of those laws were struck down by the courts since the federal government is charged with immigration enforcement.
Now states are again getting involved with immigration law but the story is very different. States are adopting pro-immigration measures such as bills to allow any residents to obtain in state tuition at universities (15 states now have this) and allowing all residents to drive (ten states now allow this compared to just two in 2012).
And there’s very little in the news about state legislatures considering major anti-immigrant measures. Regardless of what Congress does in the coming months, there certainly seems to be a change happening around the country.
